How to take down the Chiefs: The gameplan.

How to take down the Chiefs: The gameplan.

Here’s why Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes are even better than most people realize and why the Chiefs might not be as unstoppable as they seem.

The Chiefs excel at misdirection and pre-snap motion, constantly shifting formations to confuse defenses. They make even standard formations look unfamiliar, keeping opponents on their toes.

Andy Reid understands that speed and confusing route combinations are key to winning. His schemes force defenders to hesitate, often losing track of Chiefs players.

The brilliance of the Chiefs’ strategy lies in their ability to prevent defenses from disguising their coverage. Instead, the Chiefs take control, forcing defenses to either adapt or risk leaving someone unguarded. When defenses adjust, it just makes life easier for Patrick Mahomes to move the ball and control the game.

To beat the Chiefs, you need two things:

1. Time of Possession and Rushing Yards:

Controlling the clock is crucial. Last season, most teams that beat the Chiefs dominated time of possession or led in rushing yards (with the exception of the Eagles). Scoring is important, but consistently good running back play that eats up the clock is even more vital. Leaving too much time on the clock can lead to costly mistakes against this team.

2. Fundamental Defense:

Defenses can’t rely on complex schemes to beat the Chiefs. Instead, they must play fundamentally sound football. To counter the Chiefs’ motion-heavy plays, defenses should abandon pre-snap motion and focus on solid, straightforward defense. Keeping a “hat on a hat” and containing Mahomes in the pocket is essential.

The Chiefs aren’t unbeatable, but to win, you have to play their game defensively.
